WHAT CAUSES CRPS?

Complex Regional Pain Sydrome (CRPS, formerly known as RSD), is a chronic pain condition that usually affects a leg or arm but can affect any area of the body.  CRPS usually develops following a surgery or injury.  High levels of nerve impulses are sent to the site or injury, which may cause pain out of proportion to the severity of the injury.  Symptoms of CRPS include:
  • Changes in nail and hair growth patterns on the extermity
  • Changes in skin (color, temperature and texture)
  • Burning pain
  • Joint stiffness and swelling
  • Motor disability

HOW IS CRPS TREATED?

Many patients manage their pain by various means which may include sympathetic nerve blocks, medications, physical therapy and spinal cord stimulation.
